PK2 - The Final Issues

And here we are. Banker has done it people, and in less than five weeks. The entire series of PK2 translated. Look on his work, ye mighty, and despair!

And now: The final two issues of this awesome series.

PK2 #17 - In the Fire

PK2 #18 - Family Affairs

 The end.

I haven't had time to read them yet (and I do NOT want to rush through this), but I am excited as HELL about getting to read these.

I don't know if Banker secretly loves it or hates it when we praise him to the skies - either way, I'm sure he'll reply with some cuss-filled sarcastic quip - but either way: I think we can all agree that the work he's put into this is truly awe-inspiring. And I know we're all thankful for it.

Now all together in the comment section:

HAIL BANKER!

    1. Well, I still haven't read all issues of PKNA, not to mention PK2. I'll tear into them and have a look for loose ends and storythreads that need to get closed... because I'm actually quite fond of the idea of continuing the story on a FF-basis.

  2. HAIL BANKER!

Personally, I actually found this to be a rather good end to the whole Ducklair saga. No really, I do. Sure, it was not perfect, but I'm pretty satisfied without needing to know what happens next for the Ducklairs. That said, I would not necessarily be against a sequel either.

Now, for everyone *not* a Ducklair (and Rupert), this could surely have been a better end. Not that it was a failure imo, but it could have been better. My first thoughts on what I would have liked to see:

Birgit - Like, wtf happened to her?

Lyla - This one might seem like an odd thing to be bugged about, but I'd at least would have liked to see her in some sort of capacity in the final issue. Sure, her importance waned a bit in PK2, but I still think she was such an integral part of the series (both combined) that she'd at least be warranted *some* kind of last appearance. I mean. even Angus gets some time in the spotlight!

Lyo - Yeah, talk about underdeveloped character. I'd get that he probably didn't really got his time to shine due to circumstances with the main story, but some stuff really bugged me with him. Like that computer of his in #15. Underdeveloped idea or just an extremely cheap way of having DA get to where he needed to be at the right time? I didn't comment on that because I hoped we'd get an explanation. Boy, was I wrong!

Merging of the two storylines in the last issue - I'd hoped for them (Ducklair and Head of security, that is) have some sort of connection, but we didn't even see Donald being informed and congratulating Rupert. Felt a bit disjointed.

But yeah, the main issues is the fate, at least short term for most of the characters. Of course Donald also suffers from this, but I thought I'd just mention the things that struck me first.

In the end, I was pleased. I didn't write all of the above to imply that I thought it sucked, which it didn't. One reason was to argue about where we could go from here, should some sort of PK3 materialize.

All in all, once again I'll give some mad props to Banker, who not only did this in a time that seriously makes me wonder whether he's human or not, but he also put me to shame seeing as I still have to translate part 2 of PK alla riscossa (it will be done, trust me, even if I realized I really dislike the ending of it). If you ever, for whatever reason, happen to come to Gothenburg or somewhere in the vicinity, just tell me and I'll definitely buy you a beer (or whatever you'd fancy). You can hold me to that.

    1. It's really surreal that Lyla Lay just disappears after "Blackout". And I agree on Lyo, we never did get to know him enough, he was just kinda hanging around.

Overall, the ending did feel pretty empty to me, definitely not how the series should go out. Then again, I was waiting for a Coronian invasion, so I guess I set up my expectations too high.

      Though I'm happy for Rupert.

      ... I don't like writing long things.

I'll take you up on that offer, I practically live near the border. I'll just break into your house one day and help myself to some apple juice in the fridge.

      Delete
    2. Well, I'll better make sure I have some apple juice then. Wouldn't wanna to know what would happen else.

  3. So what do I do now?

    Translate Pikappa? Um... well... uh...

Maybe I should get another motion comic started. Would be cool to be able to do it again. Eh...

Though when it comes to a visual fanfic of PK3... Man, I've been brainstorming lately, coming up with new characters, storylines and ways to get old characters involved. I'd be all for it.

And I'd start it off by having Daisy hit by a truck, followed by Donald and Tempest having sex in front of her mutilated corpse.
Alright... maybe not that. Her punishment must be more severe...

Finally, if I could, I'd really love to translate Double Duck. I believe there are only three stories in English or something. But with lack of Italian scans on the net... problematic...

    Well, we'll see what happens.

I still have the last two issues to read, but I know I'll enjoy them, now that I know not to place my expectations too high.

It'd be a shame to let the "community" die out, I definitely think you should continue translating. I don't even know what else is out there, but I get the impression that there are plenty of interesting Italian Disney comics that never made it to Finland. Whatever you translate, I'll read and thank- no, worship you for it!

Also, I'm all for the idea of fanfiction. It'd be a different experience to write something cooperatively. Plus, the only fanfiction I've ever written is Harry Potter stuff, and it's been years, I'm interested in doing something new in that field now.

  5. To people commenting about the (sorta) weird ending of the series: I guess most people knows it at this point, but the weirdness comes from the fact that PK2 was closed in a hurry to enable the 3rd series to start.

PK3 was a (rather unsuccessful) reboot, likely pushed by Disney USA and targeted to a younger, international audience. Disney was already going on the market with a PK videogame based on 3rd-series characters and themes, so the 2nd series had to terminate quickly to "make room" for PK3.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Considering what I've seen in the PK videogame the third series still continues the tone of PK2 so I'm absolutely sure it would be worth it. Also, the german site phantomiasfanpage.de gave very favourable reviews to a lot of issues, so that I'd really like to read the series. Regarding the official translation: Only one of the two stories per issue was translated and also it ends at issue 20 for quite a while so only two thirds of the issues are translated half-ways...

But I do agree we could try to make a fanfiction, definitely. I'll have to translate the rest of the Contaminator story first anyway ^^.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It does not continue the tone of PK2. It is as retarded as possible. Banker, in His Great glory, could do a test-translation of some of the more... 'impressive' short stories. That one about 'Snailman', for example. Yes, they did a story a bout a chronovillain called 'SNAILMAN'. Think of it.

So you could see the horror... the unfathomable horror...

    2. ...I kind of want to read it anyway. Just to see if it really is that bad, or if it's at least so bad it's funny.

  7. Aside from Pikappa , there is also MMMM and x-Mickey which , although i have the mickey as a character , MMMM , x-Mickey and PKNA are known as the three best italian comics series and possibly three of the best comics series in comics history , so maybe these would be a good start i think :D

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. MMMM would be a bit problematic as it doesn't exist in a language I 100% understand.

But maybe I'd look into it if someone would tell me what fonts zvbxrpl used when he did the first two issues.

Though X-Mickey is translated in my own language up to #21, though the stories only appear randomly in the weekly comics of the mouse.

  9. X-Mickey is also (partly?) translated for iOS though, so if you really don't want to translate a comic that could be bought on iTunes this would hit X-Mickey, too. Otherwise Pikappa, MMMM and X-Mickey should be sufficient for quite a while ;). Some of us are contributing their little tidbits in classic DA stories anyway. Agent Double Duck is a standard "LTB" story here though, so it's released in German, too, is it a "big" comic series like PKNA / PK2 / Pikappa / MMMM in Italy?

    1. "is it a "big" comic series like PKNA / PK2 / Pikappa / MMMM in Italy?"

      Yes and no.

Yes, because the stories have a strong continuity: http://coa.inducks.org/comp2.php?ser=Double+Duck&default_o=1&kind=nk&pg1=1

No, because the stories are published inside "Topolino" and not in their own magazine (like "Paperinik New Adventures", "PK2" or "Pikappa")

      Delete
    2. Ooh... This Agent Double Duck series is something they are apparently now releasing in the Donald Duck pocket books here in Finland. I haven't read them for years, but today, on an impulse, I browsed some of the new ones in a market, and those agent stories looked interesting. I need to find a second-hand bookshop in this city (I moved a few weeks ago) and see if there are any interesting DD pocket books for cheap.

  11. HAIL BANKER.

Right, I've already shared some thoughts on this, but whatever.

I liked the ending, since I didn't see any way the Ducklair situation could end happily, and it didn't. More very, very bittersweet. I wish One had been reactivated 'on screen' so to speak, but since there's nothing to contradict me, I'm going to assume he was. He just needs time to start properly. So there.

It felt a bit unsatisfactory for the Avenger though. Not even 'the adventure continues' just 'what happens now?'.

  13. Metamorphosis, eh... A great Xadhoom issue. Though my vote still goes to In the Shadow, if it has to be Xadhoom. If something other than Xadhoom is fine, I might vote for... A Single Breath. Or The Ulysses Syndrome. Or Time to Time. Or... heck, I don't know, there are some many great ones in the first series that I can't decide which is my favourite. >.< Probably In the Shadow after all. Oh, the bittersweetness...

  15. Right, so I found a second-hand bookshop and bought a bunch of DD pocket books with Agent Double Duck stories - luckily including the first story. Now let's see if they're as good as they look on a quick browse...

  16. Ugh, my fucking country...

I suppose it's common too have a few name changes when translated to another language, but... Norway just went way fucking overboard.

What examples do I have... well, Angus Fangus being Konrad Kiwi is common in many countries, so I won't count that.

Ehem. Lyla Lay is Lydia Lay, Uno/One is Glupus, Due/Two is Slupus, Mary Ann Flagstarr is Susanne Sann, Clint Westcock is Haggelmo, Abraham Wisecube is Gregor Granat, Morgan Fairfax is Gunnar Grønning, Anymore Boring is Per Person, Rupert Potomac is Robert Rugg, Fitzroy is Birger Brå and... urgh... Tempest Gale is Frida Falken.

This is fucked up. Why do you gotta have the first and last name start with the same letter anyways?

And nice going with changing the titles of the issues! "The Voice of Darkness" is in my country basically "Ducklair's Daughters". Spoilers much? Assholes...

I'm bummed out... I'll at least go get the rest of the bonus stories done.

    1. It's a comic thing. Just look at Marvel.

And Glupus and Slupus are the dumbest names in that group. There's theme naming, and then there's 'HEY, THIS ONE'S CLEVER, AND THIS ONE'S EVIL. YOU GOT THAT RIGHT?'.

    5. No. Do get started. I need rage here!

    6. Isn't the real kicker the fact that Donald Duck isn't translated. Sure, it's was already set waaaay before the series came out, but still...

Especially when the name is somehow connected to the charatcer, like One and Two.

Must have been a relief that the swedish translation rarely translates names and when it does, doesn't stray too far away from the original ;)

Probably some stupid artistic license on the translator's part...

      Delete
    7. Hmm... okay, I remembered it worse... Mike Morrigan is Max Markward, named after Helmut Markwort from the magazine Focus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helmut_Markwort) and that Colonel serving under Wisecube has a different name but other than Lyla and Angus they preety much kept the same names. Then again, they stopped after Second Draft, and I can onley speculate how they would have went on. The way it looks to me is that they renamed the main characters for the first issue and then just had to sorta roll with it.

One thing that i DID notice, especially during "Fountains of the Moon" is that there are pages missing in the issues I bought. I found additional pages in the scanlations. Mostly when there is italian text somewhere in the background and they couldn't or wouldn't translate it, they just cut the entire page.

      Delete
    8. @ Blotling

Yeah, Sweden did a way better job. Several characters just got minor changes to their names, and even when there were major ones, they were still kinda cool. Except Vertighel's, what the fuck were they thinking?

The Norwegians ones are just 10 kicks in my balls. I can't help but be disgusted whenever someone goes "Oh hai Frida" to Tempest fucking Gale...

      @ Atlantis

Wow, cutting out pages just like that... sucks, man. That just ain't right.

But of boy, I'm not even getting started on the name changes! What more do I have...

Burton la Valle is Roger McNebb, Grrodon is Heven, Ducklas Styvesant is Stian Spilleberg, Rangi Fangus is Konny Kiwi, Fenimore Cook is Dennis DeMoon, Baldo is Burre Bever and Oberon de Spair is Oberon de Sperat. I mentioned that last one because I don't know what's so "desperate" about Oberon.

Oh, I'm sure I can find a lot fucking more...

      Delete
    9. Well, remind me about Vertighel's Swedish name again. Only like 14 years since I read that story in Swedish ;)

    10. Ouch! Talk about mood killer.

    11. Eh. I'm just so damn... urgh. Least I got plenty of Swedish comics. But damn, that cost of shipping. To the neighbor country. Yet it's not like that the other way around.

I couldn't make this shit up.

      Delete
    14. Speaking as a Norwegian, if they only had been consistent, I actually wouldn't mind so much. There's a lot of precedent in silly name translations in Duck-comics that they were building on, so most readers will, a couple of bad cases aside, just take that as par for the course.

But! Zondag was also Zontag at one point, Cook was DeMoon in one issue but an untranslated Cook in another, and Two was Slupus sometimes and Sleipus at others. And I'm sure there were others that just don't spring to mind. And _that_ bothered me.

      Delete
    15. I know another. Grrodon is Heven in his first appearance, but later on his name's the original one.

    1. I was gonna throw a link with a list of Swedish comics (since I'm Swedish I can only speak for Swedish comics) published internationally, but the site wouldn't play nice with Google Translate.

There are some comics, the list was longer than I thought it would probably be, but personally, I don't really know if there are any real hits internationally. But what do I know. I'm not too versed in Swedish comics anyways to be a credible source or anything.
